How to install Windows XP software

Installation of an operating system on a computer which already has an OS is very easy. It can even be an upgrade from the lower version to the higher version. The installation is similar to installing other software and does not take much of thinking from the user's end. But when it comes to installing the windows XP from scratch most of the users find it difficult to carry on the task.

Let us now go through the requisites for installing Windows XP from scratch.

1. First of all if there is already an operating system and you want to make a clean installation removing the previous OS (operating system) you need to format the entire system. This task is taken care of while installing windows xp. Before starting the formatting process ensure that you have a bootable CD and not an ordinary CD. Once the whole system is clean you require to boot from the CD to start the installation process. Also, keep the CD key handy so as to enter it whenever it asks. Apart from windows xp CD you also need to keep your motherboard CD handy so as to install the system drivers after the OS is installed.

2. Take a backup of any important data which you do not want to lose due to formatting.

3. Restart the computer and press DEL button on the keyboard or any other button assigned to enter the BIOS settings of your computer. Once inside the BIOS, go to boot order or boot preferences or any other name given to the boot sequence. Change the first boot to CD ROM and also the second boot just in case to be sure the OS starts from the CD. Press F10 or any other key assigned to save the changes and exit from the BIOS setting.

4. By default the installation is done in the C: drive. But you can change the drive if you want by selecting Advanced option during the start of installation. If you want to format the entire PC do so by deleting all the partitions when asked and creating the new ones. If not, you can keep them intact. Windows XP formats the partition to NTFS file system for installing windows. You can format all the partitions into NTFS now itself or you can quick format once the OS is installed by going to MY Computer> right click> format.

5. The installation typically takes about 40 minutes depending upon the data to be formated in your pc. The installation process asks some questions in the middle of installation regarding your pc and it does not proceed until you answer them. So it is better to be around the pc and keep checking the process.

6. Once the installation is done you are given choices to set up the network and other things like security features. You can skip these if you plan to do them at a later stage. After the installation is complete you have to install your system drivers which you will find on your motherboard CD.

7. While installing your system drivers the computer may restart once or twice. When it does the first time press the DEL button or any other button assigned to enter the BIOS setting. Change the setting of boot sequence to hard disk for first boot. You can keep the 2nd and 3rd boot to anything you like. Now save the settings and exit from the BIOS setting. Now your system boots from the OS installed on your hard disk.

General maintenance tips for computer - Software

We always wonder as to what happened to our computer that used to run like a sprinter when we had purchased it. Now it seems to have lost its touch of running at the same pace. Luckily we can do certain things without spending a dime on computer maintenance to make it as good as new ready to fire up and work as it used to do when we purchased it.

Some tips to keep in mind while performing maintenance on your computer.

1. Take off the power supply cord while cleaning any inside parts of the CPU as the components can hold on to some electric charges and may discharge by giving you a slight shock. Do not try to remove the monitor covering as the CRT monitors hold on to a very high voltage even after removing all the power cables and can be hazardous if touched by bare hands. It is always better to let the professional technicians to take care of the monitor.

2. Use a dry cloth instead of vacuum cleaner to clean the inside of CPU. The insides can also be cleaned by blowing compressed air into the components, but this can lead to blocks due to microscopic particles entering the components. Just cleaning the upper layers with a dry cloth is all that is needed.

3. Usually most of the dirt is found in the fans which are found on SMPS (the back of the CPU) and the one which is over the processor. You can detach both these fans and clean their blades. The processor fan also has a heatsink which is required to absorb the excess heat from the processor. Detach both the fan and heatsink and clean the partitions of the heatsink.

4. If there are a lot of cables in the inside of the CPU, there is a possibility that these cluttered wires are causing the restriction for free flow of data from one component to another. This will ultimately lead to slowing up of your pc. Sorting out every wire by detaching and reattaching can help a lot. Usually the data cables take up most of the space inside the CPU. The extra cable can be folded and pushed towards the free space in the CPU cabinet to free some space.

5. Check whether all the components like the memory card, video card, network card etc are placed properly into their slots. Sometimes due to partial placement of these components the computer can work erratically thereby slowing down and hanging the applications. Removing these cards from their slots and cleaning them superficially with a dry cloth can help a lot. Also check whether the data cables are placed properly and completely onto both the IDE(Primary and Secondary) channels on the motherboard.

Priority Tweaks without any software

Priority tweaks are those changes which we can make to some of the system components to load faster and utilize more resources than those which are not critical. Although these tweaks are very advanced and need to be done very cautiously, once done correctly, there will be significant improvement in the way your system behaves generally; and especially during startup. System crashes and instability are common consequences of doing these tweaks in haste. Also, giving priority to more than one critical components can cause system instability or there might be no measurable changes to the system as it takes the default values.

Let us look at one of the priority tweaks which can make bootup faster than most of the computers. Various systems have reported to boot completely within 30 seconds of starting. Of course, this result is in conjunction with other optimizing tweaks, but 30 seconds is very less time to load a system with windows xp or even vista for that matter.

The priority tweak we are going to make now is called IRQ priority tweak. We can give a priority to system CMOS or video card to improve I/O performance or increase the frame rate respectively. Generally the system CMOS has an IRQ number 8. We have to create a dword value in the following path of the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ PriorityControl

Right click on the right-hand side and click on New>Dword value. Now type IRQ8Priority and click OK. Double click on the key and set the value to 1 and press OK.

By the way, if you want to give priority to any other component, you can find its IRQ number by right clicking on My Computer icon on desktop and going to Manage. In computer management go to Device Manager and click on View button in the Main Menu. Here, click on resources by type. Now navigate to Interrupt Request(IRQ) and expand the icon. You will find the IRQ numbers of various components. You can also find them by going to Start> Run and type msinfo32.exe. Now expand the tab Hardware Resources and click on IRQs.

The changes will will seen after the sytem is rebooted. If everything is done correctly, there will be significant changes in bootup period and also in the behavior of various software.

Disabling software & services to improve XP performance

Windows Xp tries to be everything to everyone. It has many built-in services which take care of various functions of the operating system as well as give us more than enough to live with. The problem is, most of us don't need all these services most of the time. These services however utilize a lot of system resources slowing down our computer. For example: if your computer is not in a domain, various services relating to it can be disabled without harming your internet connection. The services can be accessed by going to Start> Run> type services.msc and press Enter. It can also be accessed by going to Start> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services.

There are some services like Alerter Service, Clipbook Service, Computer Browser, Help & Support, Indexing Service, Messenger, Net Logon Service, Remote Registry Service( should be disabled for security reasons), Smart Card, Universal Plug & Play Service, Workstation etc which can be happily disabled.

There are many more services apart from these which are most of the times unwanted. However, it is better to go through the description before making any changes to the services. It is always better to keep the default setting for the services which we do not understand. There are some services whose description cannot be understood by laymen. Therefore, it is better to leave them alone.

What is a software called msconfig utility?

MSCONFIG utility is the short form of Microsoft System Configuration Utility and is meant for advanced users. This utility has tabs related to the boot option, the way system boots, the services which are running and the startup programs which automatically start during the windows startup.

Most of the users need to look only for the services and startup tab as these give us an idea as to why the system is becoming slow and where the system resources are utilized. Although other tabs are equally important it is recommended to leave the default settings intact and not to make any changes unless you have a thorough knowledge of the consequences.

So lets look at what the services tab can do for us. This tab when clicked gives four partitions. They are: Service, Essential, Manufacturer, Status. These show us exactly what they say. For example: if you do not have a printer installed on the current machine, print spooler service can be stopped. Most of the services cannot be directly related to any program which we can control. It is better to go for services.msc to get a complete description of these services. For this go to Start> Run> type services.msc and press enter. By highlighting the service you get its description and by double clicking it you can change its current status as well as how it starts the next time system starts.

Now let us look at the important and the easiest part of MSCONFIG utility. Clicking on the startup tab leads us to the programs which automatically start during the system startup. Most of the programs are not required during startup. The only important ones are firewall and
antivirus. Most of the software which we install try to start automatically every time system starts. For example: Nero(a CD burning software) tries to start every time the system starts to check for updates. Now this program is not needed as we do not burn a cd every time we start a pc. So this startup entry can be disabled. We are not disabling the program altogether, but just making it not to start during startup and exploit system resources. It can always be started from usual locations like desktop or programs.

After making the changes click apply and close the utility. It will ask for a restart. If you want to see the changes click restart or you can restart later if you are still working on your pc.

Software to change the start button text

There is a software called resource hacker which helps you to change the text on the start button in windows xp. This software shows many other things which can be useful in the long run but for the time being it is a cool program to see what it looks like to have your name on the start button or anything other than "start".

This program can be downloaded as a freeware from the internet. After unzipping the files run the resource hacker tool. From the program go to file and open C: Windows and open the explorer.exe file. But before opening the file copy the file and save it somewhere safe on other drive. Now open the file through resource hacker. Now we have to make some changes to the string table entries.

Click on the string table and find folder 37. Now click on the 1033 icon. On the right hand side we see that there are many entries with various numbers attached to them. We have to change the string number 578 with the words "start".

Select the word start without the quotes and type whatever you want to be displayed on the start button. Remember to keep the quotes intact. Now click on compile button. Now save the file as save as... explorer1.exe in windows folder.

Next step is to go to start> run> regedit
In the registry go to
Now search for a string with the name as Shell. Double click it to make changes to it. Now type explorer1.exe and click ok. This is done so that the system recognizes the file you have created the next time it logs on. Now quit the registry and log off or reboot. You will now see whatever you wanted to see on the start button.

Decreasing bootup time without software

There are various ways to decrease bootup time without using any software. We just have to make some tweaks into our system and we can get the most out of it. The most optimized windows xp machines have shown to load within 30 seconds! Since one machine can do it every other machine which runs windows xp can do it too. There are a few simple changes which can be done through control panel and some other which can be done through making changes to the registry keys.

1. Defragmenting the drives: This can be done by going to My computer> right click on a particular drive> properties> tools> defragmentation. This can also be done through start> programs> accessories> system tools> disk defragmenter.

2. Disabling most of the visual effects can boost the performance of windows xp. This can be through control panel> display> appearance> effects. Disable all the effects. You can also do it by right clicking on desktop> properties.

3. Start> Run> Type msconfig and press Enter. Now go to Startup tab and disable all those programs which are not needed during startup. Usually no programs are required other than firewall and antivirus during startup.

4. Start> Run> Type services.msc and press Enter. A list of services appears along with their description. Choose their startup type by double clicking on them.

5. Clean your desktop of unwanted icons and do not keep any folders with data in them. Each icon takes time to load and many can have a considerable effect on boot time.

Softwares for improving XP

We all have faced one or the other problem which leads to making windows Xp slower than what it was when we had bought it new. There are various reasons due to which our operating system is loading at snail's pace. Usually there is a lot of junk data stored in the pc which leads to slowing of the loading time. Apart from that there can be registry errors which making the booting of operating system a laborious task.
Thanks to the software makers there are now programs which take care of these issues and try to optimise the boot time. Some of the softwares are Tuneup Utilities, Registry booster etc. These softwares help the user to take complete control of his pc by tweaking the registry to suit his needs. These software make things very easy through their user-friendly graphic interface. There is hardly a need to go to run command and type the long paths of the registry to make the changes.

Understanding the Software world

Softwares are basically divided into two categories. They are: application softwares and system softwares. Application softwares are those which the users makes use of for working on his present workstation whereas system softwares are those which the computer uses to interact with the user and provide a result wanted by the user.

Every program we use are created by other assembly level languages which give the features to the softwares. These are called programming languages and are usually done in non-graphic mode. Some of these programs are C, C++, C#, Java etc. These programs create the programs which we use and give them their features. Most softwares are user-friendly and do not need any training to use. But the programming languages need a lot of training and expertise to create another program which can be used on windows based platforms.
